All about me

Emily_ESOLAwardsI am a freelance ELT materials writer. I have recently finished co-authoring an adult course for National Geographic Learning (Cengage).

My current passion is graphic facilitation. There are many benefits to using drawings in the classroom. It’s creative. It’s relaxing. It’s engaging. It’s supportive. It’s fun. It’s also great for checking understanding, aiding memory, supporting students to take notes and activating life skills such as critical thinking. To support ELT practitioners, I now run online courses to share my knowledge and experience.

I have been writing ELT materials since 2009. I wrote the A-Z of ESOL for Academic Study Kit and 50 Ways to Teach Life Skills for Wayzgoose Press. I have also written ELT materials for organisations such as MacMillan Education, the British Council, LearnJam (formerly ELTJam), TESOL Press and Language Fuel ELT Training Library as well as a wide range of ESOL for Vocational Purposes Courses for City of Glasgow College. These include: ESOL for Social Care, ESOL for Customer Care, ESOL for Employability, ESOL for Science, ESOL for Early Years, ESOL for Construction and ESOL for Modern Apprenticeships.

I have experience writing for print, digital, online and mobile as well as general English, business English, ESP and ESOL.

Since 2007 I have been an ESOL Lecturer at City of Glasgow college. In that time I’ve embraced many opportunities. These include co-ordinating the ESOL Network Project, being seconded as Development Officer for ESOL at Education Scotland and managing the Sharing Lives Sharing Languages Project for the Scottish Refugee Council.

I am delighted to be included in NATECLA Scotland’s ESOL’s Most Wanted list, Atena Juszko’s fabulous blog (under the ‘Get inspired by…’ section) and to be a a case study for using simple graphics on Emer O’Leary’s blog.

You can also watch the interview I did with the wonderful Pauline Blake-Johnston for the NATECLA Scotland YouTube Channel. It’s a brief overview of my story so far.
